A woman due to have surgery to remove her ovary has given birth to her ‘miracle baby’
Caroline Darlington, from Warrington, was just weeks away from having an operation to remove the ovary when an ultrasound scan revealed the wonderful news.
The 39-year-old and her husband, Roy, 48, had tried for many years to have a child of their own but after IVF failed the pair accepted they would not have children naturally.
The couple went on to adopt their son, who is now six.
Caroline suffers from endometriosis, an excruciatingly painful condition where tissue from the uterus collects in other parts of the body. She also had a cyst that needed to be removed.
She was due to have her ovary removed due to the pain she was in but the surgery was delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic.
In September last year, she was due to have a final scan before the operation took place when the sonographer told her she was 16 weeks pregnant.
Caroline told the Warrington Guardian: “The nurse said to me ‘your ovary looks fine, but you’re actually pregnant.
“My stomach had been swollen, but I thought it was because the cyst was growing.
“You can imagine it was a bit of a shock – I remember thinking, ‘oh my god, what is my husband going to say?’”
Caroline said the pair were in ‘complete shock’ for a few days.
She said: “We feel the new arrival is a miracle that would never have happened had it not been for the pandemic.
“We feel so grateful for our blessing and want to let people know that you should never give up hope.”
The couple married in 2001 and began trying for children straightaway.
Caroline was diagnosed with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, a condition that stops eggs from being released each month, and she was unable to fall pregnant despite endless investigations and treatment.
She suffered several ruptured cysts over the years and even had emergency surgery on Christmas Day 2016 to remove one of her ovaries after losing two pints of blood.
She said: “I lost two pints of blood and had one of my ovaries removed – it was hugely traumatic.
“I felt more terrible for my son because it was his Christmas Day that was being ruined.”
But all that has now been forgotten since their unexpected arrival.
Little Jorge Albert Darlington was born in late March weighing 11 lbs four ozs.
