Identical twins Amy and Courtney have done many things together as sisters but having a child together was not one they imagined
The Australian sisters share that unique bond twins often do, and when Courtney watched her sister, Amy, struggle to have a baby after four long years of trying, she did not hesitate to offer to be her surrogate to give her the best chance of having a much-wanted child.
Mother-of-two Courtney told the New York Times she made the offer to be surrogate without ever discussing it with Courtney.
She said: “We’re so intrinsically tied, it felt like it was something that was supposed to happen.”
But while Courtney was able to conceive her two children naturally, it was not the same story for Amy.
The twins were diagnosed with an eye condition as young children known as Axenfield-Rieger Syndrome, meaning they were both diagnosed with glaucoma at just 12 years old.
After creating just one healthy embryo from an IVF cycle, the couple was told they should be ready; step forward Courtney to give the embryo the best chance of implanting.
Just two weeks later Courtney revealed to the couple that the transfer had worked and they were pregnant.
The pair have been posting their journey on Instagram, revealing the baby girl is due in October 2021.
Amy told CafeMom they wanted to document their journey so others on a similar road would know they are not alone.
Amy said: “The process of IVF is incredibly difficult. There are such high highs and low lows that having a good support network becomes intangible.
“The joy of having my sister by my side the entire way, and now carrying us all to the finish line is something I cannot even begin to describe.”
