“First of all, we would like to express our sympathy for the long journey you have had.
“Through studies we now know that one of the most important factors for successful treatment is blastocyst quality.
“As the maternal age increases, most embryos that are generated are either chromosomally incorrect or metabolically weak and have difficulties implanting.
“Looking at your history, it seems very positive that you are able to generate blastocysts. Provided that you and your partner have had a full diagnostic check up that rules out other reasons for an increased tendency to produce aneuploid embryos, maternal age is therefore the most important factor in this regard.
“We know that in a woman over 40 years old, only about 20% of all embryos produced are genetically normal and therefore have the potential to develop. If one is transferred, the pregnancy often ends in an early miscarriage (before 12 weeks) or the embryo does not implant.
“Regarding your history, it is possible that you had one of these or it was a genetically normal embryo but other factors played a role such as coagulation or immunological/uterin factors.
“In summary, all hope is certainly not lost
“In my opinion, you, as a couple, should consider whether you want to continue down this path, knowing that a similar outcome is possible, or whether you can imagine getting help from a donor, with an egg donation.
“Unfortunately, it also depends on your financial possibilities. It may be necessary to go through several cycles until a healthy embryo is found.
“As mentioned above, a detailed and extended diagnosis should also be made in order to exclude other factors for a potential failure.”
Explaining the medical jargon:
Chemical pregnancy: a very early pregnancy loss that occurs when an egg is fertilised but doesn’t fully implant in the uterus.
PGT testing: when a biopsy of cells from the embryo is removed to check the number of chromosomes that it has.
Aneuploid: an abnormal number of chromosomes in a cell.
blastocyst: a blastocyst is the term given to an embryo when it reaches a particular developmental form with a fluid filled cavity, a mass of cells (destined to become the foetus) and other surrounding cells (destined to become placenta).
Coagulation: Clotting of the blood.
Egg donation: is the use of egg cells taken from young and healthy donors and used by patients who have entered menopause or early menopause due to their age or who are unable to achieve a healthy pregnancy with their own eggs
