Start your day off right, with this beautiful Berry Blast Smoothie
Many people are undernourished and have a ‘nutritional gap’ without even realising it. Eating fresh, whole foods each day in a range of colours is critical to nourishing the body and assisting it in supporting several critical processes related to PCOS. These include
• lowering inflammation.
• supporting gut health
• keeping toxins low.
• balancing your hormones (for example: insulin, androgens, cortisol and sex hormones)
This delicious smoothie contains important ingredients to help you on your way to doing this and provides a great balance of good fats, protein, carbohydrates as well as lots of vital vitamins and minerals. So, if you are in a rush why not whizz one of these up and take it with you! Don’t skip breakfast!
Why are the Key Ingredients in this smoothie good for us?
Kefir is a tangy fermented drink made from milk or sweetened water. Great for gut health and promoting the ‘good’ gut bacteria. The ‘tanginess’ is the result of bacteria and yeasts that use the sugars in the milk or water for fuel. This probiotic food is made by culturing fresh milk with kefir ‘grains’- which are live colonies of yeasts and bacteria. The bacteria ferment the milk and create a range of different substances, including calcium, potassium, protein, vitamins, acetate, and lactate. Kefir makes a great addition to smoothies and the protein helps to balance out the release of sugars into the bloodstream helping to balance blood sugar levels.
Berries are a fantastic source of antioxidants as-well as vitamins, minerals and fibre to help ‘zap’ those free radicals that can lead to oxidative stress in cells and thus helping prevent damage to the DNA, including the egg and sperm cells. They also help with cognitive function, keeping the brain healthy and helping lower inflammation in the body.
Avocados are amazing! Avocados are fruits and are also known as ‘alligator pears’ due to the texture of the skin and is shaped like a pear! They are packed with nutrients from folate to vitamin K, are a good source of healthy monounsaturated fats (important in helping to reduce inflammation) and contain a small amount of carbohydrate so great for helping balance sugar levels, hormone levels and energy too.
Cinnamon is a warming spice that helps to stabilise glucose and triglyceride levels in the blood. It acts as a fantastic antiseptic and a powerful antioxidant which also helps to reduce inflammation in the body.
