Lance Bass, the former *NSYNC member, reality TV star, and TV host, is preparing for the arrival of twin babies with his husband of seven years, Michael Turchin
They first announced their good news back in June, and now the twins are almost here. Lance recently told the American entertainment programme ET that he’s excited for their arrival. “I got twins on the way. They could come any day which I’m kind of really scared about. I won’t be at the VMAs for the next 18 years!”
He and Michael have struggled on their road to fatherhood. Sadly, they have experienced failed surrogacy attempts that ended in miscarriages. They lost twins last summer during a miscarriage. “We realized it’s so common. We’re trying not to get discouraged. The process has been so long.”
Even getting to the embryo transfer stage was a challenge for the couple. Says Michael, “we went through nine different egg donors, which is rare. We got all the way down the path of about to retrieve their eggs. Some just wouldn’t produce enough eggs; some weren’t good genetic matches. If you’re going to be a match, you don’t want to even risk it.”
But things have turned around, and now the couple is expecting a boy and a girl, who will arrive in early November – even though Lance wishes they would arrive sooner, in time for Hallowe’en. “I need them to get here before Hallowe’en, because I need them to be Halloween babies. They have no choice but to love Hallowe’en because I’m obsessed and they’re going to be obsessed.”
Lance and Michael decided to try for twins due to Michael’s close relationship with his twin sister. “We always knew that if we were going to start the family, we wanted to go for twins just because Michael’s a twin — he’s a boy/girl twin. And he just loved that experience.”
Lance would have loved a twin himself. “I always wanted to have a twin, but we’re like, ‘Well, that’s so perfect because now we can do one of mine, one of yours.’ It was a no-brainer!”
Now, Michael and Lance both hope that their own story will inspire others, and they also hope that surrogacy and IVF become more affordable for LGBTQ couples. “Because especially with so many gay families, they end up spending so much of their money, all their savings, for that one try, and then it doesn’t work. It’s like, ‘Well, what do we do now?’ So hopefully it moves in that direction where it becomes attainable for everyone.”
Of course, countless LGBTQ people cannot afford fertility treatments, or, depending on their situation and geographical location, cannot find doctors willing to help them. Lance and Michael are making LGBTQ fertility treatments more visible, and hopefully this added exposure will lead things in a more equal and affordable direction.
We wish Lance and Michael all the best with their new twins, and we can’t wait to see pictures of the little ones when they arrive
