A British couple are waiting on tenterhooks for a passport for their surrogate baby in Ukraine
Ben and Alice Garrett, from London, moved to Ukraine in December for the birth of their son Raphael, but have had a nervous wait for the passport paperwork to be completed due to the embassy staff fleeing the troubles in the country with Russia.
Ben told the Mirror: “Ukraine has very different surrogacy laws to the UK which means that it is much easier to work with an IVF clinic and a surrogacy agency here to have a baby that way so Ukraine is an international hub of people coming for surrogacy services.
“We’ve always known it would be a lot of paperwork once he was born, for us to bring him home – but obviously, what was going to be a period of potential boredom, waiting in an apartment in Kyiv for two and three months, is now more nerve-racking.
“Unless we can get a passport for Raphael in a conventional way, or if that becomes impossible, the British Embassy get to the point they can give Raphael an emergency passport, we can’t leave – so it is nerve-racking.”
The 40-year-old said the city of Kyiv seemed quite normal despite the tensions with Russia.
The couple said they were in constant contact with their family and friends, who are said to be nervous for them.
Ben said he hopes that the British Government will be able to intervene and help them leave as soon as possible.
