In today’s world of a constant stream of social media posts and 24 hour rolling news, it’s hard for anyone in the public eye to keep a secret. But that’s exactly what Grimes and Elon Musk have done – as they’ve just announced the birth of their second child together, born in December 2021
Singer Grimes told all to Vanity Fair that she and Tesla and SpaceX founder and entrepreneur Elon welcomed their daughter into the world at the end of last year after using a surrogate during the pandemic
Grimes actually had to speak about her daughter during the interview unplanned, because the interviewer heard a baby’s cry. At first, she said she wasn’t at liberty to talk about it, but eventually said that they’d been able to keep her a secret due to the lockdown.
Their second child has an unusual name, her full name being Exa Dark Sideræl Musk. Grimes explained that Exa refers to the term “exaFLOPS”, used in supercomputing to describe the ability to perform 1 quintillion floating-point operations per second. (We’re not sure what supercomputing terms are, but we’re certain they do!)
Dark refers to the unknown and according to Grimes, they chose it because “People fear it but truly it’s the absence of photons. Dark matter is the beautiful mystery of our universe”.
Sideræl is inspired by the elf spelling in sidereal, which means “the true time of the universe, star time, deep space time, not our relative earth time.” It’s also a nod to Galadreil, her favourite character from Lord of the Rings.
The couple’s first child together is called X AE A-XII, or X for short, and so their daughter is often nicknamed Y by the couple.
Grimes opened up in their interview about her difficult time when pregnant with X. During the final month, she “could barely walk and kept collapsing” because X was pressing on the nerves in her stomach
“I took a few steps and collapsed. It was kind of scary, because you don’t want to fall a lot when you’re eight months pregnant. So I would just crawl to the bathroom and crawl back or whatever… Like, I haemorrhaged. It was scary.”
Grimes spoke of her split with Elon in September last year, whilst their surrogate was pregnant with their daughter. She described the arrangement they now have as non-traditional saying, “I would probably refer to him as my boyfriend, but we’re very fluid. We live in separate houses. We’re best friends. We see each other all the time…. We just have our own thing going on, and I don’t expect other people to understand it.”
Elon is no stranger to using assisted fertility techniques, since his 17 year old twins and 15 year old triplets with ex-wife Justine Wilson were conceived through IVF
