Radio and television presenter Emma Barnett has revealed she has been going through IVF and had suffered a miscarriage
Emma, who is the host of BBC 4’s Woman’s Hour, opened up about her struggle to have a second child in an interview with The Times.
The 37-year-old told how she had her son five years ago and one single round of IVF, but since then she has had five failed rounds of IVF and suffered a miscarriage.
She said she decided to talk because the world hears so few stories of IVF being unsuccessful.
She said: “My womb is definitely empty, and I am reporting to you live from the front lines of failure in the hope that it may be helpful and to be honest.
“I am not looking for sympathy or pity – I am sharing my story in the hope it will help more people understand and explore what motivates us to keep trying.”
Emma said she will be continuing her journey to have a second child and will begin her seventh IVF cycle soon.
She was diagnosed with endometriosis four years ago.
She said: “Casting my mind back, I used to read those stories who had been able to endure and afford six, seven or eight rounds of IVF and think, ‘how on earth do they keep going?’
“That question is in the front of my mind as a potentially embark on what will be our seventh turn on the IVF merry-go-round.
“I only hope that sharing my experience while it is happening may help someone else trying, failing and trying again.”
