BNP Paribas is expanding its fertility and parental leave benefits to its employees in Canada
The company will offer up to $ 10,000 lifetime coverage for gender affirmation and fertility treatments.
According to Benefits Canada, the bank is also adding eight weeks of paid paternity leave for new dads.
Employees will be given $1,000 within their mental health practitioner benefits by increasing the paid number of personal days from two to six.
Sonja Volpe, chief executive officer at BNP Paribas Canada, said the bank was focusing on employees’ specific needs during a difficult time.
She said: “Those needs are unique depending on where you are in your life.
“The challenge for someone with young children is different than someone taking care of the elderly. We tried to introduce benefits that maximise support for our staff.
“We made it our priority to frequently review our benefits through the lens of diversity, equity, and inclusion. It was through this review we realised we should do more in specific areas, one being around fertility treatments. We want people to feel they can be their authentic selves at work.”
Other companies that have taken a similar route include the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce(CIBC) which announced it was extending its maternity, paternity, and adoption leave to 17 weeks from July 1.
Its fertility benefits now include prescription medication and other treatments, as well as reimbursement for certain out-of-pocket medical expenses for surrogacy.
