A clinic in Melbourne, Australia is the first in the country to offer public IVF to 4,000 couples a year who are struggling to conceive
The move has been described by Victoria premier Daniel Andrews as ‘game-changing’ and will be run by the Royal Women’s Hospital and Monash Health.
He said: “IVF can be a game-changer for people who might be struggling to have a child, but too often, and for too many, it’s financially out of reach.”
He said that with each IVF cycle costing in the region of $A10,000, the clinic will help remove barriers for those who want to have a baby.
According to the West Australian newspaper, the clinic has been allocated $A70million to it from the 2021 budget which was a 2018 election promise from the Andrews government.
If the current government is re-elected, there is a hope that it can expand the provision next year to support 5,000.
