A new study hopes to examine fertility-related care and genetic counselling among adolescents and young adults (AYAs) with Sickle Cell Disease (SCD)
It has been shown that having SCD and associated gonadotoxic treatments may impair fertility.
Researchers found that despite the potential impact of SCD and gonadotoxic treatments on reproductive health, fertility was rarely addressed within the medical world.
Rates of counselling about the hereditability of SCD varied by site, underscoring the importance of standardized multi-disciplinary care.
Research has suggested that provider-initiated discussions of fertility and reproductive health are important to improve reproductive outcomes in AYAs.
Further research focused on the effects of treatment, access to reproductive health counselling, and knowledge of SCD implications is important to ensure educated and shared decision-making for AYAs with SCD.
Dr Marcelle Cedars and ASRM president said: “Adolescents and young adults need to be made aware of the potential fertility implications presented by the sickle-cell disease. This study suggests doing so could improve reproductive outcomes in those with sickle-cell disease.”
Do you have sickle-cell disease? What impact has it had on your fertility? We’d love to hear your story, email mystory@ivfbabble.com.
The study will be discussed at the American Society of Reproductive Medicine Scientific Congress being held in Anaheim, California on October 22 to 26, 2022.
