Researchers will present a new study at the 2022 American Society of Reproductive Medicine Congress(Oct 22-26) that has gathered evidence to show cell phones with data usage through WIFI have harmful effects on sperm motility and viability
Scientists have said cell phones emit radiofrequency–electromagnetic radiation (RF-EMR) to transmit data for social media, web browsing, and music/podcast streaming. RF-EMR is considered an environmental pollutant and has been postulated to increase oxidative stress and induce free radical formation.
Even though previous studies have demonstrated negative effects on sperm parameters, the impact of modern smartphone technology and wireless spectrums (4G, 5G, and WIFI) on sperm motility had not yet been investigated.
Researchers studied the impact of RF-EMR from common cell phone usage on sperm motility and viability from fertile, normozoospermic men and found that sperm motility and viability are negatively impacted with smartphones that utilized data on the WIFI spectrum.
The research appears to show that the heat that emanated from the device contributes to this effect, as the device was noted to be warmer than when phones were used only with either 4G or 5G. With large variability in smartphones, continued research on exposure effects is needed and the current association should be considered cautiously as hypothesis generating.
Dr Michael Thomas, ASRM president-elect said the study shows a strong relationship between cell phone usage and sperm damage.
He said: “This study is an in-depth look at how our much-used cell phones may be contributing to male-factor infertility. More research is needed to make a definitive conclusion but the data shows that there is a relationship between cell phone data usage and sperm motility and viability that needs to be examined further.”
