A new study has revealed that just one alcoholic drink a day can have an impact on male fertility
The study, which was carried out at the Tongi Hospital, in Shanghai, looked at 27,000 adults who underwent fertility treatment.
They found that live births reduced by nine percent when men drank seven drinks, or 84g of alcohol a week, compared with those who did not drink anything.
It concluded that drinking just one drink can reduce fertility success by a whole tenth.
Alcohol is said to reduce the number of sperm, as well as the size, shape, and motility of a man’s swimmers.
In women, it was shown that those who drank 84g of alcohol had a decrease in success by seven percent.
The study’s lead author, Dr Yufeng Li, said couples need to be aware that lifestyle factors can have an impact on their fertility outcomes.
He said more research needs to be done, but the study proved anyone wanting to conceive should take a look at their lifestyle.
As reported in the Metro, he said: “The safest level of alcohol when undergoing fertility treatment can only be zero.”
