Former flight attendant Kelly Clarke had always wanted children but never found the right partner nor the right time to have them with. So, at the age of 50, she decided to go ahead with IVF treatment to become a single parent
Despite facing a ‘huge amount of resistance’ from her family, Kelly went ahead with the treatment and flew to a clinic in Athens for it. She says that she knew it would be her ‘last chance’ at becoming a mother.
Now 52, Kelly is the proud single mum of a healthy baby, Lyla Rae Clarke. She argues that becoming a parent at 50 was the right time for her, as she is not partying and can raise her daughter how she sees fit, without having to disagree with anyone.
Kelly says that the best thing about being a single mum is that she can give her baby all the love and attention she needs.
She is also grateful to have the support of her family, despite their initial resistance to her IVF treatment. They were concerned at the thought of her being an older mother and using a sperm donor to welcome a child – and therefore not being able to co-parent, she claims. But she knew that being a mum was what she wanted and that at 52, she is now better equipped to deal with life as a mother.
“I feel super blessed that with the life experience I have I can better guide Lyla Rae now than I would have in my younger years.”
Kelly is now an advocate for single women over 50 who want to have children via IVF. She believes that it is a viable option for women who do not have a partner.
