A couple from Oregan has welcomed twins from embryos frozen 30 years ago
Mother-of-four, Rachel Ridgeway gave birth to a boy and girl on October 31 – believed to be a new record.
The embryos were frozen on April 22, 1992.
According to the National Embryo Donation Center(NEDC) Lydia Ann and Timothy Ronald are likely to set a new record.
The organisation told CNN News it had helped birth more than 1,200 frozen donated embryos.
The previous NEDC record-holder Molly Gibson was born in 2020 from an embryo frozen 27 years ago.
The twin embryos were created by an anonymous married couple using IVF. It was reported the man was in his 50s and his wife was in her 30s.
The embryos were donated to the NEDC in 2007 for another couple to use.
The twins’ father, Philip Ridgeway said the process was ‘mind-boggling’.
He said: “I was five years old when God gave life to Lydia and Timothy, and he’s been preserving that life ever since.
“In a sense, they are our oldest children, but our smallest children.
“There is something mind-boggling about it.”
The embryo transfer was performed by Dr John David Gordon.
He said: “The decision to adopt these embryos should reassure patients who wonder if anyone would be willing to adopt the embryos that they created five, ten, 20 years ago. The answer is a resounding yes.”
In a statement, the NEDC, said: “We hope this news will encourage others to experience the blessings of embryo donation for themselves.”
