Australian actress Rebel Wilson has revealed she felt disconnected during the surrogacy process that helped make her a mother
The comedian announced the birth of her daughter, Royce Lillian, earlier this year and thanked her surrogate for helping her to realise her dream of becoming a parent.
Rebel, who came out around the same time and introduced her girlfriend, Ramona, to the world, talked candidly to the Today programme.
She explained how as she approached 40 she realised she wanted to be a mother and went to visit a fertility clinic.
She said: “At the time, I didn’t have a partner, so I went to the fertility doctor.”
But after going through three rounds of IVF and creating several embryos, she had the heartache of being told none of them had survived.
She said she felt ‘devastated’ that not one of the 18 eggs had worked.
She said: “I had done all this work, lost 80 pounds, I was being healthy and doing everything that the doctors asked of me. I felt awesome and then it didn’t work.
“It was such an emotional rollercoaster.”
She began to share her fertility story on her Instagram page and was overwhelmed with the response.
After several more attempts, Rebel opted for surrogacy.
And even though she praises her surrogate as ‘gorgeous’ and ‘loving’, she said the experience made her disconnect.
She said: “Having a baby via surrogate is a bit of a different experience because, in a way, you feel a little disconnected.
“Even though I had this gorgeous surrogate who was so loving and it was so awesome to get to do this with her.
“But it’s not until the baby popped out – it was almost like a comedy scene – and then you hold the baby and cut the umbilical cord. It was just amazing and emotional.”
The star has the support of her mother and Romana, which she said has been a real help.
She said: “I went from being a single woman to having an instant family, in a way. It’s definitely been a big adjustment.”
