If you’re a tea lover and thinking about starting a family, you might be interested in some new research that suggests your daily tea habit could be doing more than just warming you up.
A recent study has found a potential link between drinking tea and improved fertility in women. While many factors play into fertility, researchers have discovered that enjoying a moderate amount of tea each day may help lower the risk of infertility.
A recent study published in Reproductive Biology and Endocrinology suggests that women who drink between 0 to 2 cups of tea daily have a lower risk of infertility. The study analyzed data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) collected between 2013 and 2018, including 2099 women aged 18 to 44. Participants were divided into two groups: fertile (1863) and infertile (236).
After adjusting for factors like age, BMI, physical activity, and health history, researchers found that women consuming 0 to 2 cups of tea per day had a 45% lower risk of infertility compared to those who drank no tea. Notably, the benefit peaked with tea consumption below two cups per day, as each additional cup was linked to a 27% reduction in infertility risk. However, the protective effect did not extend beyond two cups per day.
While the study highlights a potential link between moderate tea consumption and reduced infertility risk, it also acknowledges limitations such as its cross-sectional design and reliance on self-reported dietary data. Despite these limitations, the findings point to tea as a possible factor in fertility health, while no significant associations were found with coffee or overall caffeine intake.
We asked our nutritionist Sue Bedford for her thoughts on this research:
“Both Green and Black Tea has many great nutritional benefits as it contains many poly phenols. The results of this study in relation to tea and fertility are very interesting and it will be great to see further similar studies carried out on this topic but in a variety of different countries and where the daily food and drink intake have been recorded by the researchers….”.
