In an interview with The New York Post, MTV star Sammi “Sweetheart” Giancola shared her desire to grow her family and the challenges she and her fiancé, Justin May, have faced along the way.
The 37-year-old, who got engaged in March, revealed that while she typically values her privacy, she felt it was important to be honest with her fans about her in-vitro fertilization (IVF) journey.
Her fertility struggles will be highlighted in Part 2 of Season 7 of Jersey Shore: Family Vacation, set to premiere on September 19. Giancola explained that she initially wanted to keep her IVF process under wraps due to the uncertainty of the outcome, sharing with Page Six: “I wanted to keep it a secret because at first I was like, ‘Listen, I don’t know if the outcome is what I want it to be . . . I will be devastated if it doesn’t work.’” Though cameras were not allowed in her medical appointments, viewers will witness Sammi administering hormone injections and opening up to her castmates about her desire to have a baby.
Sammi has been undergoing IVF treatments for some time and clarified that her ex, Ronnie Ortiz-Magro, was not part of her life during this journey, despite their shared history and recent onscreen reunion. “He’s just a coworker now, and we’re not connected in any way beyond that,” she said.
At 35, Giancola made the decision to freeze her eggs, unsure at the time of what the future held but knowing she wanted to keep her options open. Now, with May by her side, she is navigating this emotional path with the support of her fiancé. “He is just very positive and uplifting,” she said. “If I’m feeling down or going through it, he brings me back to a good place where I can focus on the positive.”
By sharing her story, Giancola hopes others might find comfort or connection in her experience. “Maybe someone out there can watch me and understand, or maybe they’ve gone through something similar and can relate,” she said.
Despite trying to conceive naturally, the couple has yet to have success.
