September is PCOS Awareness Month, a time dedicated to raising understanding of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), a condition that affects 1 in 10 women in the UK. It’s a chance to highlight the challenges of living with PCOS and ensure women and girls know the signs, so they can get support early. For many, a diagnosis of PCOS also means navigating fertility concerns, and IVF can offer hope for those struggling to conceive.
What Is PCOS and Why Does Awareness Matter?
PCOS is a common condition that affects the ovaries, causing a range of symptoms including irregular periods, fertility issues, acne, and unwanted hair growth. It can be incredibly distressing, not only physically but also emotionally.
The impact of PCOS on fertility stems from irregular or absent ovulation. Without regular ovulation, there are fewer opportunities to conceive, which makes pregnancy difficult for some women. But it’s not just about fertility; increased testosterone levels can cause excessive hair growth (hirsutism), acne, and hair thinning on the scalp. Additionally, weight gain is common due to increased insulin levels, which encourages the body to store more calories as fat. On top of that, the hormonal imbalances can lead to anxiety and depression, which can be just as challenging as the physical symptoms.
Raising awareness is vital. Early diagnosis allows for better management of the symptoms, including fertility issues. Although there is no cure for PCOS, treatments like lifestyle changes and medications can help manage symptoms and improve quality of life.
PCOS and IVF: What You Need to Know
For women with PCOS trying to conceive, there are several treatment options. Medications that stimulate ovulation can be effective for many. However, for some, IVF may be the best route.
The good news is that women with PCOS tend to respond well to IVF. However, there is a challenge: women with PCOS can sometimes respond too well to ovarian stimulation. This can lead to Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome (OHSS), a potentially serious condition where the ovaries become overstimulated. At Lister Fertility Clinic, we have specific protocols to manage this risk, ensuring your treatment is as safe and effective as possible.
Your fertility consultant will tailor your IVF cycle specifically to manage your PCOS. This customised approach helps improve outcomes and reduces the risk of complications like OHSS.
Success Rates and Realistic Expectations
While IVF is a promising option for women with PCOS, it’s essential to have realistic expectations. IVF success rates vary from person to person, but many women with PCOS go on to have successful pregnancies with the right treatment. At the Lister Fertility Clinic, we’ve seen many patients with PCOS achieve their dreams of becoming parents.
Tips for Managing PCOS During IVF
Before starting IVF or other fertility treatments, it’s worth considering some lifestyle changes that can improve your overall health and increase your chances of success. Regular exercise and a balanced diet can help manage PCOS symptoms, particularly weight gain. Aim to include plenty of fruits and vegetables, whole grains like brown rice and wholemeal bread, lean meats, fish, and chicken in your diet. If you need specific dietary advice, your GP can refer you to a dietitian.
In addition to diet and exercise, certain supplements may help alleviate PCOS symptoms. For example, supplements like Inofolic is recommended three months before trying to conceive, and have been shown to help with unwanted hair growth, acne, and other PCOS symptoms and therefore can also be taken as a regular supplement.
It’s also important to take care of your emotional well-being. PCOS can be overwhelming, but you don’t have to go through it alone. There are many support groups where you can connect with others who understand what you’re going through.
A Message of Hope
Living with PCOS can be difficult, but you are not alone. Whether you are just starting your journey with a diagnosis or are actively managing your symptoms, there is support available. At Lister Fertility Clinic, we have seen many patients with PCOS go on to have successful outcomes, and advances in fertility treatments mean there is more hope than ever.
Stay connected with the community, reach out for help when you need it, and remember that you don’t have to face this journey alone.
