A mother-of-eight has revealed she is pregnant with her own grandchild after offering to be a surrogate for her daughter
Chalise Smith, 50, is carrying a child for her daughter, Kaitlyn Munoz after the 24-year-old was told she was infertile due to auto-immune disease Sjorgen’s disease.
Kaitlyn, who also has endometriosis, had two-year-old Callahan through IVF, before her diagnosis but was told she would not be able to have another pregnancy.
She said: “I was crushed, it’s always been my dream to have a big family, it’s been my dream to be a mum since I was eight years old.”
Chalise, from Utah, said she was devastated when she learned that Kaitlyn could not have any more children. She said she thought about Kaitlyn’s dream for many months before calling her up and offering to be her surrogate.
She said: “I thought for a long time about how she wouldn’t be able to have any more children, I kept my thoughts secret, I didn’t even tell my husband, Kyle.
“But a few months after she told me, I gave her a call and offered to be her surrogate. She was in shock as she’d been sitting in a car park mulling over how she’d be able to have more children.
“My call was like a moment of fate for both of us.
“I told Kaitlyn that everyone had to be 100 percent on board, Kyle, her husband Miguel and Kaitlyn.
“I was already 100 percent in, but if there were any single doubts from anyone involved in the decision, I didn’t want to keep pushing.”
Due to her age, Chalise had to go through lots of medical tests to get approval to become Katilyn’s surrogate. She got the go-ahead in September and had two embryos implanted. She is due to give birth to her granddaughter in May.
Kaitlyn said: “I was so shocked when my mum offered to be my surrogate. She’s always been so supportive of what I want to do in life and my dreams of having a big family.
“I know that all of her pregnancies went perfectly and that she is extremely healthy, so I never doubted there would be any issues with her being my surrogate.”
Chalise said she was looking forward to welcoming her granddaughter.
She said: “In my heart and soul, I just see this picture of having a beautiful girl for my daughter and her husband.
“They’ve longed for this for so long. To see the love and joy on their faces on the arrival will fill my heart.”
