Juergen Teller’s latest project, “The Myth,” is a playful and artistic interpretation of the “legs up” fertility myth, created in collaboration with his wife, Dovile Drizyte.
Following their humorous 2021 series, “We Are Building Our Future Together,” where the couple dressed as construction workers, “The Myth” represents the next chapter in their relationship as they embark on starting a family.
Set in the enchanting Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni on Lake Como, the Tellers captured images in each of the hotel’s 97 unique rooms. These photos range from full-body nudes of Drizyte to unexpected appearances of her legs or feet peeking from behind duvets, curtains, and furniture, all viewed through Teller’s loving lens.
The theatricality and ambiguity of these scenes evoke Teller’s iconic 2004 series “Louis XV,” shot with Charlotte Rampling at the Hôtel de Crillon in Paris. This deliberate nod to past work is a recurring theme in Teller’s oeuvre, though this project carries an air of serendipity. The Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni, managed by the same family for four generations and steeped in tradition, features art celebrating motherhood and family. Paintings and sculptures of pregnancy, babies, storks, and cherubs became unexpected symbols of good luck for the Tellers’ journey into parenthood. These elements enhance the personal and intimate nature of the images, reflecting the deep trust and creative connection between Teller and Drizyte.
But does lying on your back with your legs in the air after intercourse actually work?
Lying on your back with your legs in the air after intercourse is a common myth associated with increasing the chances of conception. However, there is no scientific evidence to support this practice. Sperm are highly motile and can reach the cervix within minutes after ejaculation, regardless of the woman’s position.
Here are a few key points to consider:
Sperm Mobility: Sperm have their own mobility and can swim towards the cervix without the need for gravitational assistance.
Cervical Position: The position of the cervix during intercourse already facilitates the journey of sperm.
Research Findings: Scientific studies have not shown any significant benefit of lying down with legs elevated after intercourse in increasing the chances of conception.
If you’re trying to conceive, focusing on other factors such as timing intercourse around ovulation, maintaining a healthy lifestyle, and managing stress can be more effective.
